Every March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics celebrates National Nutrition Month, highlighting the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating habits to support a healthier life. What began as a one-week observance in 1973 became a month-long celebration in 1980—making this the 45th year of National Nutrition Month!

This year’s theme, “Food Connects Us,” recognizes the many ways that food ties us to our families, cultures, communities, and overall well-being. At RVNAhealth, we embrace this message wholeheartedly, offering expert nutrition services designed to support your health journey—whether you need guidance for managing a medical condition, achieving wellness goals, or simply developing healthier habits.

How Can You Celebrate National Nutrition Month?

“Food not only nourishes our body, it nourishes our soul,” says Carmen.  It is often a special part of the connections we have with the people in our lives. It connects us to family, whether it be at family dinners, holidays or special celebrations. It connects us with friends either at someone’s home, or perhaps a restaurant. And it may connect us with our community, at a block party or neighborhood event. Whether it is talking one-on-one over an appetizer or enjoying a full-on feast with the whole crew, food ties us together!

And food is definitely and directly connected to our health.

This March, we encourage you to take part in National Nutrition Month by:

  • Sharing a meal – Connect with loved ones over a nutritious, home-cooked meal.
  • Exploring new foods – Try a new recipe or a cuisine from a different culture.
  • Focusing on whole foods – Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins into your diet.
  • Consulting a registered dietitian – Meet with an RVNAhealth dietitian to develop a personalized nutrition plan.

What is one thing you can do this month? Boost Your Health with Omega-3 Fatty Acids!

One of the simplest ways to improve your overall health is by increasing your intake of omega-3 fatty acids—essential healthy fats that support brain function, heart health, and reduce inflammation. Omega-3s are found in:

  • Fatty fish, like salmon, tuna, and mackerel
  • Nuts and seeds such as walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds
  • Plant-based oils like flaxseed oil and canola oil

Incorporating omega-3-rich foods into your diet can help reduce the risk of heart disease, improve cognitive function, and support joint health. Here are two recipes you can start with: Energy Balls with Chia Seeds and Walnut-Crusted Salmon
