Better-for-You Spinach Artichoke Dip

Recipe by Carmen Weber, RDN, CDN

Better-for-You Spinach Artichoke Dip puts a nutritious twist on the beloved traditional version, offering all the creamy, savory satisfaction with far fewer calories and much less saturated fat. By swapping out heavy ingredients like full-fat cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise for lighter options such as Greek yogurt or reduced-fat cream cheese, this upgraded dip maintains its luxurious texture while boosting protein and reducing overall fat content. These simple substitutions deliver a lighter dip that’s just as flavorful but far more nourishing.

Here’s how to make it:

Serving Size: 10-12

Ingredients:

  • 10 oz frozen spinach
  • 1 (14oz) can quartered artichoke hearts
  • 8 oz reduced fat cream cheese
  • 2 c plain non-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1½ c parmesan cheese
  • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced

Note: Want it faster? Skip the baking and simply transfer the hot dip to a serving dish and serve immediately. Or you can make it a day ahead then bake just before serving.

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400F and spray a baking dish with non-stick cooking spray or olive oil.
  2. Cook spinach according to directions on package.
  3. While spinach cooks, drain and rinse artichoke hearts then roughly chop to ensure bite-size pieces.
  4. Once spinach is cooked and cooled, use cheese cloth to drain spinach well, squeezing out all excess water.
  5. Heat cream cheese, yogurt, butter and parmesan cheese in a pot over medium heat. Stir frequently until melty, gooey and mixed well.
  6. Once creamy and beginning to bubble, reduce heat a bit and add spinach, artichoke hearts and garlic to pot, stirring well so all is incorporated.
  7. Transfer to a baking dish and bake for 15 minutes. If desired, move up to top rack to broil for 2-3 minutes. Watch so it doesn’t burn.
  8. Serve with crostini or pita chips. Enjoy!

Benefits to Better-for-You Spinach Artichoke Dip:

Nutrient-Dense Ingredients:
One of the biggest benefits of this healthier dip lies in the powerhouse vegetables it features. Spinach is rich in vitamin K, vitamin A, folate, and iron—nutrients that support bone strength, vision, red blood cell production, and overall energy. Its antioxidants also help combat inflammation and oxidative stress. Artichokes bring even more nutritional value with their high fiber content and beneficial plant compounds like cynarin and chlorogenic acid, which are known to support liver health and heart function. Together, these ingredients transform the dip into a nutrient-packed snack rather than just a guilty pleasure.

Enhanced Protein & Probiotics:
Using Greek yogurt as part of the creamy base enhances the dip’s nutritional profile even further. Greek yogurt adds a significant amount of protein, which supports muscle maintenance and promotes satiety. It also provides probiotics, which help maintain a healthy gut microbiome and improve digestion. The combination of protein, vegetables, and fiber makes Better-for-You Spinach Artichoke Dip more satisfying and energizing, helping you stay full longer without consuming excessive calories.

Supports Healthier Eating Habits:
Because this version is packed with nutrients and significantly lower in unhealthy fats, it fits easily into a balanced eating plan. It satisfies cravings for creamy, indulgent flavors without the heaviness typically associated with traditional dips. The nutrient-rich ingredients help maintain steady energy levels and contribute to a more wholesome snacking experience.

Better-for-You Spinach Artichoke Dip successfully blends the indulgent flavors of a classic favorite with a health-conscious twist. By incorporating nutritious ingredients without sacrificing taste, it provides a satisfying, flavorful option for those seeking a more wholesome alternative to traditional dips. Whether served as a snack or appetizer, this dip offers a perfect balance of indulgence and nutrition, making it an ideal choice for both health-conscious individuals and flavor enthusiasts alike.
